Recap: Industry Voices—Time to rethink our approach to using one of modern medicine's miracles?
Before lifesaving diagnostics existed, doctors would prescribe antibiotics as a precautionary measure, in case bacteria were to blame as the infectious culprit. Unfortunately, over time, this has led to overprescribing even when a bacterial infection is not present.
Overprescribing can lead to diminished effectiveness of antibiotics against bacteria, especially, as they mutate and change to try to evade the counterattack. This is known as Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Over time “superbugs” can become incredibly harmful to humans and not treatable with antibiotics. We all want to avoid this global threat.
In this timely article, Lee Fleisher, M.D. and Vitor Rocha explore how to avoid this threat with new protocols including awareness, empowerment, and policy. Lee A. Fleisher, M.D. is an anesthesiologist and former Chief Medical Officer at the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. He is currently CEO of Rubrum Advising. Vitor Rocha is the president of Cepheid.
The two healthcare leaders advocate that:
- We must evolve to only prescribe or take antibiotics after a diagnostics test identifies the infectious cause – protecting the future of antibiotic effectiveness and humankind.
- Upon detection, we must use specific treatment for the specific cause as indicated.
- We must ensure accessible diagnostics become the standard of care to mitigate unfathomable loss of life and more than $5 billion extra healthcare dollars a year.1
