Impact Story
Transgender men and women, men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers, and migrants often face prejudices and miss out on sexual health testing due to challenges accessing healthcare through traditional care pathways.
In at-risk Spanish communities, there is a need to improve access to and shorten the time it takes for screening and treatment of STI.
The Adhara - Sevilla Checkpoint clinic offers STI testing and linkage to treatment as well as counseling and education about STI.

With the Cepheid GeneXpert system, test results for HIV, HCV, Gonorrhea and Chlamydia are obtained within 60 – 90 minutes, which significantly reduces the waiting time compared to traditional testing and allows for treatment decisions to be made during the same visit. For HIV-positive individuals, the team is able to connect patients to hospitals for treatment quickly.
"Key success element of our program is the reduced waiting time between symptom onset to lab results and treatment enabled by point-of-care testing."
-- Diego García Morcillo, Director Adhara - Sevilla Checkpoint
Engagement with the point-of-care program is very high, based on internal customer data. Among 3,124 screened clients, the level of satisfaction was reported 4.8 out of 5; time to receive treatment: 4.8 out of 5; time to get an appointment: 4.9 out of 5; and quality of the services offered, including sex education and counseling: 4.7 from 5.
