A Quick Primer on the ADLM Guidance on Respiratory Virus Testing
Respiratory viral testing capabilities have advanced significantly in recent years and a variety of testing options exist, differing in the number of pathogens detected, viral markers, regulatory status, speed, and accuracy.
The Association for Diagnostics and Laboratory Medicine (ADLM) released expert recommendations and a decision-making algorithm to guide healthcare professionals on key aspects of testing for respiratory viral infections. We have reviewed this comprehensive resource and provide here a summary of the key recommendations as a quick primer.
Why, when, and who to test: there’s an algorithm for that!
The questions of whether, why, when, and who to test are critical for diagnostic stewardship. An algorithm was suggested to aid decision-making. Hospitalized patients with severe symptoms or underlying conditions and high-risk populations, such as older adults and immunocompromised individuals were prioritized for testing.
