Dr. Baker’s global journey and dedication to infectious disease medicine offer a compelling perspective on leadership, innovation, and purpose. We asked her a few questions to learn more about what inspires her work, how she approaches challenges, and what advice she has for others in science and public health.

Why did you choose to join Cepheid?

Before joining Cepheid, I worked as an infectious disease physician at a large health system in Minnesota. One evening, after a long shift at the hospital, I received a call from Cepheid asking if I might be interested in a position in Medical Affairs. I was familiar with Cepheid, especially the Xpert® SARS-CoV-2 test, which was invaluable (literally, it was like gold) during the early days of the pandemic. Although the thought of leaving a nearly 20-year career in patient care was daunting, the opportunity to contribute to something greater and develop tests that impact lives worldwide felt like the right path.

What past educational, research, or professional experience are you most proud of?

One of the accomplishments I’m most proud of is the research I conducted as a medical resident on diagnostics for TB meningitis. While working with a diverse patient population in Minneapolis, I partnered with our microbiology lab and clinical mentors to study PCR testing for earlier, more accurate diagnosis—work that led to my first publication and deepened my appreciation for the power of diagnostics in public health.

Describe a travel experience that transformed you personally or professionally.

I’ve always had a deep curiosity about the world. Some of my happiest moments are spent with my husband and teenage children, boarding a plane to explore a new place together.

After college, I was accepted to medical school, but I felt that before I could truly understand health and human experience, I needed to see more of the world. I deferred my admission, worked as a waitress, and saved enough to buy a plane ticket.  That year of travel was transformative, especially my time in India. It left such a lasting impression that I later returned to work in a TB hospital as a medical resident and eventually conducted research during my training focused on improving TB diagnostics.

What inspires you outside of work?

Outside of work, I find inspiration in supporting young people. I serve on the executive committee of the Child Friendly Cities Initiative in Minneapolis, a partnership with UNICEF, focused on advancing programs that improve the lives of children in our community.
