Explore Cepheid’s response to the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak in Africa, featuring press releases, expert insights, videos, global health resources, and more.
Situation Overview
Cepheid is actively supporting the global response to the 2026 Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak with rapid molecular diagnostics, strong regional partnerships, and a long-standing commitment to expanding access to testing where it is needed most.
With more than 20 years of experience responding to public health emergencies, including prior Ebola outbreaks— Cepheid is working alongside global and in-country partners to help enable fast detection, informed clinical decisions, and outbreak control.
Facts About Cepheid’s GeneXpert® & Xpert® Tests for Ebola
Cepheid’s Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever test is U.S. FDA cleared for use by the United States Department of Defense (DoD)1 and part of DoD's Next Generation Diagnostics System 2 Program.
The Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever test is designed to help detect high-consequence pathogens like Ebola with speed. Running on the GeneXpert system, the test delivers results in approximately one hour—enabling fast clinical decision-making and helping healthcare providers respond quickly in critical situations.
The multiplex panel is capable of detecting multiple life-threatening pathogens, including:
· Ebola viruses (Zaire, Sudan, Taï Forest, and Bundibugyo)
· Marburg virus
· Lassa fever virus
· Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus
With extensive GeneXpert system deployment across the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Uganda, South Sudan, and Rwanda, critical diagnostic infrastructure is already in place to support rapid, decentralized testing in outbreak-affected regions.2
Running tests on existing GeneXpert platforms in-country strengthens surveillance programs, enhances laboratory systems, and supports data-driven decision-making. With a network of healthcare professionals already trained to operate GeneXpert systems, new diagnostic tests can be deployed rapidly, helping to protect populations through faster outbreak detection, response, and containment.

Expanding Access to Testing
Cepheid’s decentralized testing approach enables healthcare providers to test patients where they are—without relying on distant central laboratories.
In June 2026, Cepheid announced the donation of an initial shipment of Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever tests to support response efforts in the DRC and Uganda. These tests are already on the ground in affected regions.
Cepheid continues to work in close coordination with:
Together, these partnerships aim to accelerate equitable access to testing where it is needed most. "Cepheid is working urgently with global health partners to deploy the Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever panel test in affected regions, particularly in regions at high risk of cross-border transmission,” noted Connie Savor, Chief Medical Officer, Cepheid.
“Cepheid's decentralized access on the existing GeneXpert installed base across Africa enables the global public health community to scale the response and supports fast isolation, treatment, and outbreak control," she added in a press release.
Driving Global Impact Through Deep Local Expertise and Partnerships
Cepheid’s response is grounded in decades of experience supporting infectious disease detection and management worldwide. The company’s diagnostic solutions have played a critical role in:
This experience, combined with strong global partnerships, enables Cepheid to respond efficiently and at scale to emerging health threats.
“The response is only possible through coordinated public-private partnerships,” said Larry Kelmar, Vice President, Government Programs and Pharma Collaborations at Cepheid. “Cepheid’s decades of experience addressing disease outbreaks and established partnerships enable us to efficiently respond and help getting testing capabilities where they are most needed," he added.

Our Commitment
Cepheid’s mission is to improve patient outcomes and protect public health by making accurate, timely diagnostic testing accessible everywhere. In the face of the Ebola Bundibugyo outbreak, Cepheid remains committed to delivering innovation, expanding access, and supporting frontline responders with the tools they need to act quickly and effectively.
The Danaher Foundation, the charitable foundation associated with Danaher Corporation, has provided a $1 million charitable donation to support urgent humanitarian response efforts addressing the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa. This funding will be distributed to three long-standing partner organizations with strong, on-the-ground capabilities, including Save the Children, International Rescue Committee (IRC), and World Food Programme (WFP). How is Cepheid responding to the 2026 Ebola outbreak? In June 2026 Cepheid announced that the company donated an initial delivery of Xpert® Hemorrhagic Fever tests(2) and is commited is to deploying as many tests where they are needed most. The company is in close coordination with the WHO, Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, in-country ministries of health, and other partners to accelerate access as quickly as possible, in alignment with applicable regulatory pathways and public health coordination mechanisms.
What virus strains does Cepheid’s Xpert® Hemorrhagic Fever panel detect? Cepheid’s Xpert® Hemorrhagic Fever panel is a multiplex assay designed to detect multiple high-consequence viral hemorrhagic fever agents, including Ebola virus (including Zaire, Sudan, Taï Forest, and Bundibugyo, not differentiated) — as well as Marburg virus, Lassa virus, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) virus.(3)
How accurate is the Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever panel in detecting the 2026 Bundibugyo strain? Analytical performance for each viral hemorrhagic fever agent species the panel detects is documented in the FDA 510(k) Summary publicly available on the FDA website (K253653).(3)
How quickly does the Xpert Hemorrhagic Fever panel produce a result? Turnaround time from sample to result is approximately one hour. Test performance is available in the FDA 510(k) Summary publicly available on the FDA website (K253653).(3)
What is Cepheid's history with Ebola and hemorrhagic fever diagnostics? Cepheid has supported public health responses to Ebola for more than a decade. During the 2014-2016 West Africa outbreak, the Xpert® Ebola test received FDA Emergency Use Authorization(4) and was deployed across affected regions, demonstrating that rapid molecular testing in decentralized settings could help close the gap between symptom onset and laboratory confirmation. Cepheid has more than 20 years of experience responding to infectious disease emergencies. In early 2020, Cepheid was first to receive FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for a point-of-care molecular PCR test for COVID-19,(5)with authorization coming within weeks of the SARS-CoV-2 viral sequence becoming available. In February 2023, Xpert® Mpox received the first FDA EUA for a point-of-care molecular test for Mpox.(6) In November 2024, it became the only point-of-care molecular test to receive WHO Emergency Use Listing for Mpox,(7) extending access to resource-limited settings globally. With GeneXpert systems deployed across more than 180 countries, Cepheid’s established global infrastructure is built for precisely this kind of rapid, at-scale response.
