We are thrilled to spotlight Juan Cruz Cuevas, V.P. of Innovation and Product Management. Based in Sunnyvale, Calif., Juan brings a rare blend of scientific depth, entrepreneurial spirit, and strategic vision to his role. With a background that spans clinical lab work, biotech startups, and groundbreaking product launches, Juan is known for turning bold ideas into impactful solutions. His leadership is rooted in a passion for improving global health, a commitment to fast-paced execution, and a belief in the power of innovation to transform diagnostics.
To better understand Juan’s perspective and what fuels his approach to innovation, we asked him a few questions about his journey, leadership philosophy, and what’s next in the world of diagnostics.
Why did you choose to join Cepheid?
I chose to join Cepheid because of the opportunity to work with respected leaders I’ve collaborated with in the past—people who move fast and get things done. During the interview process, I was inspired by the company’s commitment to evolving its culture toward greater innovation and by the chance to make a real, tangible impact on global health through this role and team.
What past educational, research, or professional experience are you most proud of?
I had a very diverse background and set of experiences, from working on a clinical lab while finishing my BSc in Biochemistry to creating and scaling businesses and startups. I’m generally proud of all of them. One highlight I’m proud of, is leading (from a Prod Management perspective) the launch of CytoScan Dx, a whole genome assay cleared by the FDA.
Why does the field of diagnostics or Cepheid's work bring you professional fulfillment?
Cepheid’s work brings me deep professional fulfillment because of the impact that our work and products have. They are used on a daily basis to provide better healthcare to patients worldwide, from a very sophisticated hospital in California, to a very modest tuberculosis facility in a developing country.
What aspects of Cepheid's culture distinguish it from other companies?
There aren’t as many diagnostic companies as Cepheid out there with the dedication to detecting diseases accurately and early (when possible). Cepheid also ensures that customers have the clinical studies and data needed to support test adoption and implementation.
What is your unique hobby or talent?
I don’t have a hobby per se, but I like science fiction books/audiobooks for commute time. I also enjoy playing padel (an emerging sport in USA, similar to tennis and pickleball but much more fun).
What inspires you outside of work?
Building and creating things, challenges… for example physical work in my house or garden, learning to do something new, helping emerging startups and entrepreneurs in biology.
